I help families solve what feels unsolvable.
it’s hard to see your family struggle and worry that it’s never going to get better.
You’re tired of having the same weekly arguments, always being the bad guy and never getting any closer to a resolution. Maybe your teen lashes out or isolates themselves. Or maybe they constantly panic about everything, blank out during tests, or don’t get enough sleep. You may not fully understand what they’re even so stressed about all the time.
Sometimes it’s obvious what they’re struggling with. Other times they just know that something feels off, but don’t know what to do about it. This is usually why they don’t tell you what’s wrong - they may not even know! But then you’re left feeling helpless and exasperated.
Through a combination of mindfulness, Dialectical Behavior Therapy skill building, and talk therapy, I help kids (age 10+) and teens make sense of their world, learn effective coping skills, and get in touch with what really matters to them.
Issues i work with:
Anxiety & panic: They’re distracted and unfocused, constantly worried about everything. They don’t get enough sleep or take care of themselves. They’re often glued to a screen.
Anger & irritability: They blow up or seem like they’re always in a bad mood. Minor things
become huge arguments. Interestingly, anxiety can often present itself as anger.
Test & performance anxiety: They know the material, but completely blank on tests. Or they
start to panic right before a performance or sports game. They constantly think about quitting.
Feeling down or hard on themselves: They cry often or say nasty things about themselves. You
don’t remember the last time they spent quality time with you.
Avoidance & procrastination: They wait until the last minute to get anything done. You know they’re capable of succeeding but are baffled why they can’t seem to get it together.
Do you get riled up when your child misbehaves or doesn’t listen? Do you worry about repeating the mistakes of your own parents? Maybe you feel disconnected from your family. Or maybe you feel like you can only be as happy as your most unhappy child.
The good news is that it doesn’t have to be this way! Your family can reconnect and stay connected. Family therapy helps cut through the noise to get to the heart of what’s really going on. I’ll help you hear and understand each other - sometimes translating, sometimes helping you dig deeper, and sometimes mediating disagreements - to finally find some resolution.
I’ll provide you with lots of parenting skills that apply to young children, teens, and even adults. I also teach kids and teens how manage big emotions so they can express their needs. Counseling can facilitate productive conversations to help solve what feels unsolvable.
why therapy with me is different
Whether your child is for or against therapy, I want them to know that with me it’s different because I’ve been through it. I went to therapy starting at age 11 and it didn’t help at all. I got shuffled around and each time, I didn’t feel comfortable expressing what was bothering me. I don’t think I even knew what it was! Instead of helping, I just felt like a problem. I started holding everything inside as a way to cope. You can imagine how well that worked…
I didn’t know it at the time, but I needed someone to give me the space to explore my internal experience and help me not feel so alone.
It took me many years (and many therapists) to finally figure out what was wrong and how to be mindful of my inner world. Listening to that inner experience rather than getting carried away by it provides us the opportunity to make better decisions.
